A People's Congress, 2011
"Presently, about 1,500 large corporations control or block the votes of most members of Congress on very important matters. It is not beyond the realm of realization to look forward to a time when a few million modestly organized Americans, representing the values of much greater numbers of their fellow Americans, turn the national legislature into a Congress of the people, by the people, and for the people." Ralph Nader
Despite the recent change in the White House and Congress, the progressive voice in America continues to be drowned out. Part of the reason we have been unable to effect real change is that we are divided into so many small and distinct groups, each struggling with it's own brush fire. Until we focus our attention on the root causes of the many diverse problems we face, we will ultimately fail to achieve real change. The power of a Peoples Congress is that it proposes to unite, for the first time, all progressive organizations into one unavoidable voice. Together we can address the systemic dysfunction in Government and restore our democracy, allowing it to function more effectively for the greater good.
Congress and the Obama administration are not listening. This Administration, with the assistance of Congress, continues to bankrupt this nation, indulge us in endless war, while facilitating the a takeover by multinational corporations of our political system, including our Elections, Social Security, Health Care, the media, our utilities, public spaces, and our natural resources. Strong and healthy corporations contribute to the quality of our lives, but this transition is threatening our democracy, our future, and our planet. It has become clear to a majority of Americans this administration is not listening to the progressive voice in this country, undermining the integrity of our financial system, and neglecting its responsibility to its citizens and their children by further endangering the stability of our biosphere.
For these reasons, We the People shall petition the National Park Service for a permit to demonstrate our dissent prior to the elections in 2011, by collecting ourselves on the mall and every other available space within sight of the Congressional Building, Supreme Court, and the White House. Whereby we shall hold a People's Congress in order to pass legislation governing our corporations, our media, and our elections. Whereby we shall send ambassadors from the people's congress on an hourly basis to their "representative" within the Congressional Building, or to their offices elsewhere. Whereby these emissaries shall act as representatives of the assembly and shall be empowered to speak on the people's behalf. Whereby informed members of the citizenry shall discuss the ramifications of corporate power as it pertains to our health, environment, elections, media, international relations, and our futures. Whereby the meeting shall remain peacefully in place, respecting the dignity of the capitol at all times, and provide for the needs of all attendees as demanded by the Park Service, until legislation is passed by Congress which mirrors legislation passed by the People's Congress 2011.
We are determined to establish a Government by the PEOPLE and for the PEOPLE by peacefully assembling for as long as it takes, and by demonstrating our support for a simple, broad, and historic agenda. The time has come.
